It’s no secret that people don’t alway do what they say. When it comes to how people use websites this is often true. What this means is that asking your users what would make your site better is not the best way to improve your website.

A website call Which Test Won posts results for A/B website testing. There are lots of tools for A/B testing your own site, but this lets you see what other very smart groups have tested!

In the details of this post you’ll find the results of an awesome test for lead generation which just happens to be

72.72% more effective,
with data to back it up.

——————————————————–

In case your too lazy to look (or time deprived):

THE RESULT IS

When you are asking a user to sign up for something a common practice is to use a large call to action button that will then whisk them away to a form asking for their personal information… at which point they exit the page.

This test shows that instead of having a button linking to a form in a sidebar simply put a mini form in the sidebar asking for a little bit of information first. This happens to be

72.72% more effective!

according to the test

This week I finally decided to create a design for my twitter page. The twitter design set up is pretty striaght forward you make a background you upload it and bam. However, I wanted to go a step further, you know pull it all together with a few small touches. In the process I found a great color selector!

When you go to the design tab in twitter pretty much your only option is to change the background photo, however in the lower right sidebar there is a link to a tool called “themeleon” which is made by the folks at ColorLoves.com. Themeleon has one of the nicest color selection set ups around. It is very helpful and intuitive.

In Photoshop you only have the color grid and then a hue slider which you can change to slide the saturation or the value, with ColorLovers set up you get to see all three at once, it’s a small change and I didn’t think about it till after I was using it, saying to myself “this is easy.”

Another nice feature is the “similar color” set up, it’s simple and helpful and if I don’t want it I don’t have to use it.
And the last small touch that I used was the undone button, and it has a little memory I was able to go back 5 color selections, pretty nice especially online!

Bottom line, I would love to have this set up in Photoshop.

Ok, it sounds a little odd, but it’s actually pretty interesting. A company called “Attention Wizard” has created some software that runs some “advanced artificial intelligence algorithms to simulate human visual processing and attention” know as ‘eye tracking’ over a website screen shot.

Below is a test run on their site.

Yes, their site and brand needs some serious design help, but their software functions so I like them.

THE TEST

I took a site that I had done some user testing on and ran it through Attention Wizard’s free “lite” report. You can do one report per day with the lite report, after that there is a fee and either I don’t understand their pricing structure or it’s a little pricey!

Here is the feedback I got on a website I built a few months ago for an artist.

Screen shot I uploaded:

Artificial intelligence eye tracking report:

Result:The artificial eye tracking seems pretty spot on with my previous user testing of the Casey Hurt website. Interesting to note, the graphics in the header where the artist, Casey Hurt is holding balloons gets a lot of attention though it is not a button or a call to action. Over all I like the tool and I think I will try it out on future projects.

It’s doesn’t have the complexity of google but that’s what makes it unique. It’s very easy to see what’s happening! Like they say it’s a visual tool.

Five second test is a very interesting and easy to use. (I would hope so since it’s a user experience site.) The short and sweet test on this site helps you find out the most prominent elements of your user interfaces.

TAKE MY 5 SECOND TEST
CONCEPT DESIGN >>

A lot of designers really enjoy feedback on their work. If you are looking for some quick and effective feedback on your designs this may be your ticket and it’s fun!

The karma set up that they have is kind of cool. You do 5 second tests for others and you get ‘karma’ (the new buzz word for points in online games) With more karma you can do more and cooler testing!

The site is a great idea and the fact that they set up an incentive program to keep users helping each other is pretty awesome! Check it out and if it looks good then I will do a follow up with some real data
